The reason why we don't like The Simpsons as much as we used to

The reality is that we don’t like today as much as we liked the nineties. We’ve been jaded by wars we stopped wanting and endless reality shows. We’ve become sick of the popular celebrities who guest star on the show, even if they were just the modern equivalents of the ones whom we loved when we were watching the show back in the 90’s, and hell, even into the early naughties (that’s what I’m calling the 2000’s right now), despite the protests of our evangelical stepfathers.

It was sometime after the movie came out that I think I started getting annoyed with the show. I was starting my first year of college and I was more into viral videos and playing games on my ZSNES than keeping up with the TV shows I was missing. The Simpsons belonged to a time of my life that was over.

When I watch the Simpsons now, it’s jarring to see jokes about Homer being in a 90’s garage band while in college. In the 90’s Homer and Marge were settled down with kids. We watched it happen. The Simpsons has stopped working, because it doesn’t make sense to us that the Simpsons are ignorant of their own effect on the culture of the 1990s. With the amount of guest appearances made by celebrities on the show and the amount of guest appearances made by the family on live action television, they have become a facet of American culture, and on some level, this lack of continuity bothers us.

I think what bothers us more is that the Simpsons has always been a mirror of our own culture, and when we complain about the quality of the show going downhill, we mean that we miss the 90s. We miss the culture of the time, or what we remember it being. We’d really just like to go back to a time when the Simpsons were still the Butterfinger mascot and we were all still cool with that.

The only things that the show can do though are to continue doing as it is and holding up the mirror, or call it quits, because until we’re happy with the world we see around us, we’re never going to be happy with the Simpsons. Work to make the culture you want to see in the mirror and some day you will.

Be sure to look out for the Moon these next few months as it approaches Perigee, because the full moons during these times will appear exceptionally large. The Moon will be at its Perigee, or closest approach, in June 23 and it will reach full moon only a few minutes after it passes this point in its orbit.

These ‘super moons’ not only appear larger because they are physically closer but, combined with a full moon, the mind can play tricks on you to think they are much larger. This phenomena is called the Moon Illusion. Try to catch these full moons as they rise/set because the illusion works when there is an object in the foreground, like a tree, building or mountains.

And to clear some things up. Yes, the top image is exaggerated and the moon won’t be a menacing object in the sky on the 23rd. No, it’s not going to come out of nowhere and dominate the sky and create destructive tides, though the tides will be affected but it’s nothing to worry about. The moon will appear large as it approaches full moon and even next months full moon will still appear large, however it will be a few percents smaller. The best time to see it will be between the afternoon of the 22nd and before sunrise on the 23rd (it reaches full moon on the morning of the 23rd technically).

seriously guys, Monsanto is the worst, and they have been for years. My stepmom actually was part of a very large march-against-them a little while ago. Like, Monsanto’s horridness should be a bigger thing that we hear about, they are horrible.
